A Prayer to Savor Summer’s End
By Lynette Kittle

Bible Reading:
“But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His wonderful light.” - 1 Peter 2:9

Summer’s end can be so sweet and yet sad at the same time, saying goodbye to the warm sunshine, full trees, bluest of skies, and nature in all its glory that reflects its glorious Creator.

As one who loves waking up each morning to summer’s warmth and early light, it’s hard to say so long to another one. To miss the sun rising as early as 4 a.m., birds singing to wake up the trees, and the sky in an array of beautiful colors, creating a summer’s delight.

For sure, the last days of summer are sweet to savor as long as possible.

Why Summer Light Brings Us Joy

As followers of Jesus, we are drawn to light, to the Light that shone before the sun was created. As John 8:12 describes, “When Jesus spoke again to the people, He said, ‘I am the light of the world. Whoever follows Me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.’”

Some of us may believe that the sun was created on the first day of Creation, but not so, as Genesis 1:3-5 describes. “And God said, ‘Let there be light,’ and there was light. God saw that the light was good, and He separated the light from the darkness. God called the light ‘day,’ and the darkness He called ‘night.’ And there was evening, and there was morning—the first day.”

It’s hard for us to comprehend, but before the sun, there was light on the earth. Many of us may be surprised to realize that the sun and moon were not created until the fourth day.

Genesis 1:16-18 explains, “God made two great lights—the greater light to govern the day and the lesser light to govern the night. He also made the stars. God set them in the vault of the sky to give light on the earth, to govern the day and the night, and to separate light from darkness. And God saw that it was good.  And there was evening, and there was morning—the fourth day.”

It’s easy to forget that the sun is not our forever source of light; Jesus is. Before there was the sun, there was the Son. 1 Peter 1:20 explains how, “He was chosen before the creation of the world, but was revealed in these last times for your sake.”

Revelation 21:23 describes heaven and His light. “The city does not need the sun or the moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and the Lamb is its lamp.”

So no wonder our hearts are drawn to summer’s light, because as children of light, spending time in the summer sunshine brings joy to our hearts, a prelude to our eternal home, where we will live forevermore in God’s Light, free from ever facing darkness again.

We Carry His Light with Us

Jesus is the light, and until He returns again, we are called to be light here on earth.” Believe in the light while you have the light, so that you may become children of light.” (John 12:36).

God has called us to be light in this world. “For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light” (Ephesians 5:8).

2 Corinthians 4:6 explains, “For God, who said, ‘Let light shine out of darkness,’ made His light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of God’s glory displayed in the face of Christ.”

As our faces often carry summer’s glow into the fall through our summer tans, as children of the light, we are called to carry God’s light, as displayed in the face of Christ, to those in darkness.

Let’s pray:

Dear Father,
Help us to savor the last days of summer, to soak in the glorious sunshine that reminds us of Jesus and the light He gives to each one of us.
Our hearts are deeply grateful that, as believers in Jesus, we are children of light and darkness has no hold over us. Forever we will live in His light.
Let us walk daily in His glorious light and lead others to walk in His light, too.
Strengthen us to let Jesus shine His light so brightly through us that those who do not know You, are drawn to You through Your precious Son, the Light of the World.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen
